Recent events have finally helped me to break a lot of chains, and for
the first time in my life I am free of them. Thinking about it and what
it means for me I wrote this in two iterations. The first was short
and without any balance. This one is smoother and has the right number
of syllables, but still could use better meter.
Confined in the dark depths of hell,
burned and ripped by savage demons,
howling in pain and misery,
and the name of the chains was LOVE.
"Thou shalt not!" rang the thwarting chains,
stopping all efforts to break free.
Slowly grew WILL, ever greater,
one day shouting the magic words.
"I shall!" shatters the first chain link;
resonating metal shrapnel
melts in flames of released hatred
and the unforged chains disappear.
Free at last the waking hero
leaves this hell and journeys upward,
to the sunlight, hard won at last,
from then to live by self command.
